Checking your fluids is easy; you either pull a dipstick or remove a cap, make sure there’s enough liquid where it’s supposed to be, and you’re done. If it’s low, fill it to the right level - congratulations, you’ve just saved yourself a trip to the shop and a lot of money.

Engine oil and transmission fluid levels are critical. Too much or too little of either will destroy an engine or transmission in short order, leaving you stranded and in need of a lot of mechanic work. Simply pull the dipstick, per the instructions in your manual, and check the fluid level...then add fluid as necessary.

Check it regularly to avoid getting air in the system - one air enters the lines, your brake power is significantly cut, and they’ll have to be bled in order to get them working again. Also - make sure you’re putting the correct type of fluid in your engine, brake system, transmission, or radiator. The type is often marked on the cap or dipstick, or you guessed it - in the manual.
